Rik Hine
I’m an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Texas Christian University. Prior to this position, I spent one year as a University Postdoctoral Fellow in the Philosophy Department at the University of Connecticut - where I earned my PhD.

Research
I specialize in philosophy of psychology, mind, and cognitive science – my research interests generally lie at the intersection between vision and mind. I’m currently working on a number of connected papers about the nature of the relationship between visual attention and consciousness. Of late, I’ve felt myself being pulled towards the ‘dark side’ of the debate about extended cognition and I’m working on some ideas accordingly.

Interests
It’s not always easy to switch off from philosophy but I find that reading poetry often offers me aid and comfort – until I start thinking about the ways in which good poets can articulate things that philosophers can’t. When that happens I usually seek solace in boxing. Watching it that is. The brutal beauty of watching consenting adults, attempt to render each other unconscious, tends to lower my rate of reflection. When I feel it returning I rant at “The Milling Cove,” my boxing blog, which has the upside of allowing me to publish my opinions without prior peer-review.
